On Sept 9th, Ales for All along with friends from Haystack Mountain Golfcourse put on a Beer Garden party.
We had about 75 people attend this event. Each person was asked to bring some beer, an appetizer and $5 donation for the band, 18switchbacks.

Local Colorado breweries donated beer for sampling. We setup a beer 'station' for each brewer to showcase their beer.
Organic beers provided by Asher Brewing included their Green Lantern Kolsch, Tree Hunger Amber and Green Bullet IPA.

We were fortunate enough to have MouCo Cheese company donate some of their wonderful cheese. If you haven't tried their cheeses, you really should. They have a wonderful Camembert, ColoRouge (munster-type cheese) and Trufello, flavored with truffle oil and flakes. These rinds are soft and delicious (and unwaxed) - be sure to eat the rind since this is where the flavor is at it's peak.

This collaboration beer was created by 14 Colorado Breweries. One of the many great things about the craftbeer scene in Colorado is that the breweries are friendly with each other. I have heard this friendliness is not as common outside of Colorado.
The Colorado Beer Man arranged for 15 Colorado Beer Bloggers to write a collaborative beer review - pretty cool idea.

They were serving 5 different beers. Sampler tray was available for $7.50.

Casper - a light session beer. 5% ABV.

White - a Belgian White. Aroma of orange zest and ginger. 5.5% ABV.

Saison - their flagship beer and my favorite. 6.8% ABV.

Maori King - new imperial saison. 7% ABV.

Belgian Resistance - german munich malt w/german noble hops and their house Belgiam saison yeast. 6.7% ABV.

Hopped on down the road to Odell Brewing
to sample their pilot beers. I adore their pilot beers - they are so much fun and there are always so many good ones to try.

This time I went with the Pilot Tray sampler. 6 pilot beers for $4.

Maize Azul 5.2% ABV - brewed with New Mexico blue corn. The corn was soaked for two hours and then mixed with the barley to form the mash.

Town Pump Pail Ale 5.1% ABV - traditional British style pale ale, dry hopped.

Session Dark Bitter 4% ABV - dark ale that is kettle hopped and then dry hopped.

Odell Red 6.5% ABV - American style red ale but with a variety of American hops added.

Nitro Cutthroat Porter 4.8% ABV - their classic Cutthroat Porter served on Nitro.

Cherry Stout 6% ABV - used a debittered dark malt (Carafa Special II) that adds deep color and aroma without the bitterness. 125lbs of sweet-tart cherries were added.

The Cherry Stout was awesome so I brought home a growler.

Bounced around the corner to New Belgium Brewing where I sampled their Frambozen (Raspberry Brown Ale) and Vrienden Ale (collaboration beer by Allagash and New Belgium).

Then it was time to drive back home. Next week, I am planning on brewery hopping around Colorado Springs.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-17072168969210489402011-01-24T11:43:00.000-08:002011-01-24T11:57:28.874-08:00Beer and Food Pairing Event at the Sun Rose Cafe (Longmont)<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimDjNCBS2g1wMYXDgjQtwh8hiJDHgpXD0dehBrutQSlOf_6IWaj1dW8nBIuc9gfxk5yIqk6w-pFrwPhrLFvGpqgTJdVsz2Dk3IYtoC2Z4iEvCRKXau7D_zaEgqxxvyAjPF6RUPjEIA/s320/017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565842441314832354" />
Just before Thanksgiving, I hosted a beer/food pairing event at the Sun Rose Cafe in Longmont. Everyone was asked to bring a few bottles from their home state/region to share.

These folks are serious about their beer and man did we have a lot of beer to share. Unfortunately, we only had 2 hours.

Below is the list of 17 beers I managed to sample during the 2 hours of Bottle Night:

Upright Brewery - Four Play

This was definitely one of my favorites of the evening. I can't believe it is nearly December 1st (my birthday) already.

I attended the 1st Annual International Beer Bloggers conference the first weekend of November, then immediately headed out of town to help my father move. When I returned I was working on the final touches for my first beer/food pairing event (next post) at the Sun Rose Cafe, then Thanksgiving and now head cold.

Between the long time lag, a million posts by the other 100+ attendees and my head cold, this blog post will be short.

I enjoyed the entire conference, had a great time, met some great people and learned a lot. I took 144 photos and will post a few here.

After checking in on Friday afternoon, a few of us headed over to Avery Brewing for lunch (liquid or otherwise). The folks at Avery were super nice to us and treated us to a tour of their barrel room along with a few tasters.

The Friday afternoon conference sessions were really good - Julia Hert from the Brewers Association, Jessica Daynor from Draft Magazine and SEO expert, Dustin Woodard. I thought they all did an excellent job and provided a lot of useful tips.

Oskar Blues hosted us for dinner/beers that evening. We were also treated to a brewery tour.

Then, onto Bottle Night back at the hotel. This was a blast! Everyone brought beer from their home state or region to share. Avery Brewing donated a ton of beer! There was enough beer for hundreds of people and we only had two hours.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHN7jIiF7MsTwaozzUpZ_96P5iY9FoIKtWuTH7kFVjMdfch2CC9D4y_nVWKs2xWDXQjbFTtIJcfn88Dladp6-z9zvMCXekbzm8K-gg-LEPbGBpXbeY1AJJBMdL9YD5v28xFy_jQrIw/s320/049.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545066061119465234" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9aAQYbOz5lwcvdLkx6GN64D1lZGvwWgpLO6flQ6v-xRuDTTmAqzSeE5mOkbii-c0ESMNZ_8UIRT2AJ7409vO_CC-AMNWJ3IiA_v6qilExt-ohqj6cfqPiXJMGSXe637f0kkqSyZHn/s320/058.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545066432649691586" />

The 1st beer I tried at Bottle night was my favorite! It was fast and furious. The following I wrote live, the photos were added later:

New Belgium
La Folie 2010
Aged in French Oak Barrels
6% ABV

Yum. I love sour beers! This is one of New Beligium's Lips of Faith beers. Copper colored with a red hue. Aged 1-3 years. All spice flavor comes from the hops - Chinook and Mt. Hood. Nice holiday ale that isn't a spiced beer. Personally, I am not a big fan of spiced beers so I like this one. Balanced and doesn't taste like a high alcohol beer. Breckenridge Brewery has been using the same recipe since 1993.

New Planet Beer
3R Raspberry Ale

Certified Gluten free beer. The topic for November is Harvest Beer and Food.

Eric Wallace made recommendations on how to pair food with beer. He said you want to make sure that the intensity of each are equal. Then, you can pair them because they have complementary flavors or because they have contrasting flavors or both.

The food/beer pairing presented to us included:

Left Hand's Black Jack Porter paired with a Mushroom Ravioli with a little olive oil and some shaved 2 yr old Parmesan cheese.

The earthiness of the mushroom complements the golden hops in the Porter. The malty sweetness and bready characteristics go nicely with the aged cheese.

Next up was Lakefront Brewery's Pumpkin Lager paired with homemade Pumpkin Pie (made by Eric's daughter). The Pumpkin Lager was so lightly spiced that it actually was overpowered by the pumpkin pie.

Then, we had Left Hand's Haystack Wheat paired with homemade cranberry sauce. The cranberry sauce had lots of citrus in it. The tartness of the cranberries were softened by the Wheat beer. The Haystack Wheat has a hints of banana, clove and nutmeg. The cranberry sauce knocked out the banana flavor. This was a very balanced pairing.

As usual, I then tried mixing and matching the pairings to see what else worked and didn't work well together.

Cranberry sauce went well with the Pumpkin Lager, as well as the Haystack Wheat.
Pumpkin Pie paired really nicely with Porter.
Mushroom Ravioli went great with the Porter.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-8923982502643639382010-11-03T11:04:00.001-07:002010-11-03T11:27:57.412-07:00Big Beaver Brewing Co.I stopped by the new brewery, Big Beaver, in Loveland last week.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga8LOx2mgDV3X5Uf9c5k3Pc7Aik6j1vSVUFIc4CI1oCOYDtPMwTtmwRyE9h-NzHhTR-XF3E8fZObMt_f6uvS3x-Pq0vh6slIka_YqXrmtfnrWNckrPL6G_WzdR00Inf0_u7Mv4hgXM/s320/010.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535386500395216194" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHrb2OhcQUQe1BqvXRD8SqIwS4dUKpYl-Vmcq-I86vFRokTuBH6b6nHAuYu3MkgJ2L0pPa-pFRc-Umu33XNmYpjUgHg4vxahCMVUOZDjEwhgdAXlsSif4hR8hOd0pqR1hctoNvaqJa/s320/014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535389912624859682" />
Big Beaver Brewery bills itself as a 'Loveland Community Brewery'. Members commit to purchase at least 2 growlers per month ($9/growler or $18/month). Membership has it's privileges ... members may make special requests for beers and they also have access to special releases.

Big Beaver did a soft launch on Oct 8th and signed up 100 members! I have attended them all except for the Strong Ale one in February (I missed out on getting my ticket in time).

The tasting for October focused on winners from the Great American Beer Festival. The guest speaker was Gary Glass from the Brewers Association. He explained how the judging process works and presented the 14 different winners. He also reviewed the category for each winner. There were 3,594 different beers entered in the GABF from 522 different breweries. These beers were judged by 150 judges. New Planet is coming out with a Pale Ale later this month. We were given 4 different recipes to taste and rate.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB-v1FCsazY3khW0KJ3_88zx_Rm5-RjgLpUR4K0DsbpPfBZuUBaDlkH7uKkEKhLJhahkAa85SC70dKUEmshpU18SWdFlKIn7zfhOBbb2yu9M6L3bSWL2B6lyJiKoLWU0oilaKZJ3_2/s320/004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504965184379396578" />

We tasted #2, #5, #41 and #530. I thought they were all very good but favored #5. #530 was very hoppy (and good) but more of an IPA than a Pale Ale. I found #2 the least interesting but it might be the best for mainstream America.

Next up, I volunteered for the Gnarly Barley Beer Festival in Loveland that was held on Saturday, 8/7. There were 22 breweries attending including Oskar Blues, Left Hand, New Belgium, Grimm Brothers (new brewery in Loveland)and Equinox Brewery (new brewery in Fort Collins).

I spent the morning pouring for Equinox Brewing. I had a great time working with Colin from Equinox and Nancy from House of Neighborly Services (the recipient of some of the proceeds from the event). We were offering Equinox's Sunrise Golden Ale and Orbit ESB. I really enjoyed the Orbit ESB.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1F91_3pai6PrRZvMLCuY_w2BqmzgkENo7iAWg8ZoKOSa__QJEcWpRNSoXTy3bIYU8sKwSw0-ZQiVrNxgsqqCGjPGB5DKigrMKaf8LuUyQ65DZ78Qt14OfXp9LkfIYoYwa5_i7F6W5/s320/011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504967787215620498" />

Then on Sunday, 8/8, I was invited to a friend's house to try some New Glarus beer. My friends picked up a few beers while they were back in WI about a month ago. My very sweet friends sent me home with a six pack which included a few Road Slush (Stout), a Crack'd Wheat, a Fat Squirrel (brown ale) and a Moon Man (pale ale). I am looking forward to drinking these soon.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfbOsWNfAkDXi-xCAk9ykTBTUBW9meyqT5ihJOhnsOnXHpdZd_UNSOv7eeQdoz4BFBe6g_J8gAQO_vWZtywYJVgCp6NFPz8MhKbsWSZkt7xYVYJBWcgnm9jcClIh8RWxXfZizYpyzg/s320/002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504969350637804018" />Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-55320135668116198602010-08-09T08:22:00.000-07:002010-08-09T08:51:27.007-07:00Summertime PilsnersI attended the monthly tasting at the Pumphouse Brewery on 7/27. This month was Pilseners and our guest speaker was Bill Eye from Dry Dock Brewing Company.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTmLQNgh8lU6SD23LZN6NW5Vw2_A3rqsctgpFgsbm88VYSM4PO7Ofe1SBRBTPAPqKqli8OvUPI5GbN0AfcJZQXmKkpvP8ZxJDXlSDWUiZddVvxvX5hi0YURgongNNAP85zzv1nfy5y/s320/019.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503438130687631154" />

We tasted: Corona (Mexico), Stella (Belgium), Heinenken (Holland), Pilsener Urquell, Czechvar, Bittburger, Paulaner Pils, Spaten, Budweiser (US), Boulevard Pilsner (american style lager), Pumphouse Pulaski Pilsner (German-style), Left Hand Polestar (German-style), Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yellow Pils (Czech-style), Gordon Biersch (Czech-style) and New Belgium Blue Paddle (Czech-style).

On Aug 2nd, I attended the monthly meeting of Ales for Females at Left Hand Brewing. The focus of this meeting was also on Pilsners. Head Brewer, Ro Guenzel, was our guest speaker. We tasted Left Hand's Polestar Pilsner, Pilsner Urquell and Miller Lite. These beers were served with german pretzels from Helga's Deli in Aurora, CO and Lowensent Extra Mustard (extra hot mustard from Germany).

Ro said that this is the beer he uses the most to judge the brewing capabilities of breweries since these beers are difficult to brew. I guess that is similar to how I use salsa to judge a Mexican restaurant. All good Mexican restaurants should be able to make an excellent salsa.

The Polestar Pilsner from Left Hand and Mama's Little Yellow Pils from Oskar Blues were my favorite of all the pilsners I tasted that week. But, I must admit that I am not really much of a lager lover.

Ales for All!Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-85122396907626950252010-07-25T13:59:00.000-07:002010-07-25T14:09:47.979-07:00Grand Opening of Grimm Brothers BrewhouseYesterday I attended the grand opening of the Grimm Brothers Brewhouse.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmbjpjs7Lx9fiWIq5FvqcUqvlv0oBBuoXQ5PHn3Vq2RatpLo1Kyak81ZM1jGhVh66-zKF1JG-3apspv4PVDC_uFH8dywJNqqjoR9SqNiCMvl-m9Ff0KdpjLCom7A5-A-heySI8e2_4/s320/006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497952166803512322" />

I had a couple of the Little Red Cap beers (an altbier). I think I will drive back up there soon and fill up a growler of the Red Cap. Yum!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc1nKsRXql0O-LnJ1cQMgmZ9l1LmrRkcbhGbXOjtjAR-BPk_plF50gjfLI5zRQabrLpmModYoC5xrU-Km3x2t1mTDV7xEw-smCFUmD4UDppJoTlVVE2l5EXbBG2sow7s1RyL9tU3fj/s320/005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497953775288435826" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS2nxs9Nr54CYJjxNviMzwYuRjyG3DSEjm2rMOVuE7q9F1UOkpmnahfsM2vrXWsYgyd7kridveRyHnHpzMWLTPnfYftuSUgtLtuT7JzLD1Iocr1LSq5wQLR8PyqdHyNtcjs09qNNZV/s320/001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497953538825978994" />Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-82771089227036447082010-07-21T06:42:00.000-07:002010-07-21T06:47:42.178-07:00Why do we blog about Craft Beer?The First Annual Beer Bloggers Conference will be convening in Boulder (which, luckily for me, happens to be my hometown) in early November (Nov 5-7, 2010). I recently attended a social get-together of local (Colorado) beer bloggers to discuss the upcoming conference. We were wined and dined and really had a great time. It was fun meeting other beer lovers (see my previous post: Beer Bloggers Gathering).

There are a variety of beer bloggers – some focus on events (like myself), some on beer tastings/ratings (I would love to learn more), some on how to homebrew, some on beer laws, and the list goes on.

But, it got me to thinking; why are we beer bloggers? I think we each have our own reason but probably we can lump us into a two broad categories: a) writers that write about beer and b) beer lovers that write about beer. Some beer bloggers are both and some are only one.

In my case, I am a beer lover that writes about beer. I am not a writer. I am a marketer that happens to love beer. I love promoting the craft beer industry. I love sharing the beer festivals, the beer/food pairings and beer dinners, new beer releases, tasting and sharing beers, and hanging out with other beer lovers/ aficionados.

I am impressed by the craft beer industry. I think these folks love what they do; they are creative, entrepreneurial and there is much comradeship. What other industry is like that? These guys aren’t competitors (okay, I am sure some are) but for the most part, they are ‘in it together’, they are more than willing to help each other, they frequently collaborate on beers, and they are changing the world together. Who wouldn’t want to help these guys?

I want to help them change the industry. I want to help change the distribution system laws. I want to help lobby for these guys. I want to help get State laws changed so that all small brewers can make their craft and sell it. I want them all to have a chance to succeed. I want them to have more shelf space and better shelf space. I want to help them steal market share from the big 2. I want these ‘little’ guys to make it – all of them!

The more we can get others to love the craft beer industry, like we do, the more clout we will have to get laws changed and the more support we can give to this industry and these nice folks. Win, win.

So, why should we attend the Beer Bloggers conference? What will we learn, experience, gain? I don’t know. But, I hope we a) create more exposure for the craft beer industry, b) get to spend time with others that feel the same way, c) we learn more about the industry so we can help create more interest in the wonderful world of craft beer and mostly, I think we will have fun!

Let me know your thoughts on this. Why are you a beer blogger? Will I see you at the Beer Bloggers Conference?

Cheers!
JenniferJenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-43695021058371585682010-07-11T16:12:00.000-07:002010-07-11T16:54:35.157-07:00Beer Bloggers GatheringZepher Adventures/Alan Wright are launching the first Annual Beer Bloggers Conference. The first one will be held in Boulder, CO on Nov 5-7, 2010.

Alan and Chad (from OB) invited a few of the Colorado Beer Bloggers out to Oskar Blues Liquids & Solids yesterday afternoon. The idea was for us to be able to meet each other and discuss ideas for the conference.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlhMrwTzaRjTnp4IJl9NskAGMMG6nVMH4PPq4fkXgg-dg2JNcYjpzhkZhiUNK_sxShwTLWNp48g2JAO0cmQFWEyyEz5YiQYW6TdBxqOVVAvw-4XXXq4s4y195ZsEEh6vci4x7EoKsi/s320/006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492796705540453618" />

Oskar Blues, a sponser of the conference, hosted our little gathering and fed us lots of beer and food. We were each given a beer flight - Pond Scum (an American-style Bitter), Maibock, SBus (Imperial Brown Ale), Columbian Supreme and ODB Barleywine. Kellner treated us to a tasting of Saison de Buff (collaboration beer by Stone, Victory and Dog Fish Head). Chef Jason kept us all happy with all sorts of yummy food - mussels, crawfish & toasted garlic bread, shrimp cerviche, wings, pizza and ribs.

We discussed possible speakers, conference topics and how to get the word out about the conference.

After all of that, we headed over to The Tasty Weasel for more beer and a brewery tour. We ran into Dale (owner/brewer) and ended up hanging out with him. He spent some time showing us some equipment (Triview) that shows if their cans are sealed properly. Pretty cool!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJQvqZmjZW5pbWPqbKDUBhaXL-1Ndd20UVp9GRnQO_eFMNIqJvmJlwRkxx6w9TIulaydpQHxFEiTL0EhbpTbNdcqL95sWDJlVE3IZocS7kBxijJTL7KSdyDDlVLHwguznRASPqkxl1/s320/016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492796290324881170" />

I ran home to feed my dog, Moxie, in between OBL&S and the Tasty Weasel. While I was home, I grabbed my last bottle of Bell's Cherry Stout to share with the group. Everyone enjoyed it!

I am definitely going to attend the first annual Beer Bloggers Conference on 11/5-11/7. Please join me there!Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-63879521744152201922010-05-08T07:12:00.000-07:002010-05-08T07:35:39.280-07:00Lots of Springtime Beer EventsIt's been awhile since I wrote anything here.. I am way over due.

Where to start? My brother came out to visit me for a week in late February. We toured New Belgium Brewery (highly recommend it), attended the 1st Annual Sour Festival at Avery and stopped by The Mountain Sun for Stout Month (where we had a most delicious Tangerine Cream Stout!!!).

The February Ales for Females focused on chocolates and beer. I have misplaced my notes on the pairings but will update you later.

Jeff Mendel was our guest speaker at the March meeting of Ales for Females where we discussed Wheat beers. The beers we tasted were:
Schneider Weisse Hefe-Weizenbier - more carbonated, sweet & spicy
Left Hand Brewing Hefeweizen Haystack Wheat - cloves
O'Dell Brewing Company Easy Street Unfiltered American Wheat - more citrus.

The April meeting of Ales for Females included a guest speaker from the Brewers Association - talking to us about women in the beer business. Our food/beer pairing revolved around fruit beers:
Great Divide Wild Raspberry Ale paired with a Blackberry
Left Hand Brewery Good JuJu Ginger Ale paired with a ginger crisp/cookie
Pyramid Audacious Apricot Ale paired with an apricot

The Pumphouse Craft Beer tasting series continues to be really fun and educational. I missed the one in February - Strong Beers. The guest speaker was Matt Thrall from Avery Brewing. In March, we learned about Belgian Ales and our guest speaker was Peter Bouckaert from New Belgium. This event occurred during a blizzard but all who attended had a blast. The April tasting was India Pale Ales and our guest speaker was Doug Odell. Another fun night.

Cheers!
JenniferJenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-35582723799876678982010-01-30T12:42:00.000-08:002010-01-30T13:39:56.129-08:00Craft Beer Tasting Series at the Pumphouse Brewery: StoutsThe Pumphouse Brewery in Longmont has recently re-started having monthly craft beer tastings. The tasting for January was on Stout beers and our guest speakers were from The Mountain Sun Brewery.

Our host, Craig, along with Brian Hutchinson (head brewery at Mountain Sun)and Jason Stengel (manager at Mountain Sun) walked us through 6 different styles of Stout along with 16 stout beer tastings.

Originally Porters were dark colored ales and Stouts were 'strong porters'. Brown malt was used for coloring. In 1817, the patent for a barley roaster was approved and Stouts were truely 'born'.

The Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout have an initial malt and light caramel flavor with a distinctive dry-roasted bitterness in the finish. Dry Stouts have a medium-light to medium body.
* Guiness
* Mountain Sun Old School

Oatmeal Stouts include oatmeal in their grist which provides a full-flavor, smooth profile that is rich without being grainy. These stouts typically are a medium to full-bodied tasting beer.
* Sammy Smith's Oatmeal Stout
* Mountain Sun Yonder Mountain Stout

Sweet Stouts/Cream Stouts have less roasted bitter flavor and a full-bodied mouthfeel. More body can be added to the beer with milk sugar (lactose).
* Left Hand Milk Stout

American-Style Stouts have a low to medium sweetness with a degree of carmel, chocolate and/or roasted coffee flavor. Hop aroma and flavor is moderate to high.
* Deschutes Obsidian Stout
* Mountain Sun Drop Kick Stout

Export (Foreign-Style) Stout have initial malt sweetness and carmel flavor with a dry-roasted bitterness finish. Coffee-like roasted barley and roasted malt aromas are prominent. Hop aroma and flavor are low to none.
* Left Hand Fade to Black
* Lion Brewing Stout

American-Style Imperial Stouts are black in color and typically are very high in alcohol content. The extremely rich malty flavor adn aroma are balanced with assertive hopping and fruity-ester characteristics. Bitterness should be moderately high to very high and then balanced with a full sweet malt character.
* Great Divide Yeti
* Mountain Sun Nihilist
* Oscar Blues Brewery (OBB) Ten Fidy
* Pumphouse Backdraft Imperial Stout 2006

"Outside the Box" Stouts:
* Pumphouse Brewery (PHB)Cherry Imperial Stout - Vail Big Beers 10th Anniversary Blend.
* PHB-Mountain Sun: Co-conspirator Backdraft Imperial Stout 2009
* Mountain Sun Oak-aged Stoked Oak

The first beer we tasted was the Guiness, which tasted fine then. By the time I had tasted a few others and came back to the Guiness, it tasted like Coors with dark food coloring. It was amazing how little flavor Guiness has.

I big fan of Left Hand Brewery and love their Fade to Black and Milk Stout. Did you know that Fade to Black has wheat in it? It's a wheat stout... actually I don't know if that is really a category.

The Sammy Smith's Oatmeal stout was tasty enough but rather sweet. Turns out that many British beers put cane sugar in their beers. There use to be a high tax on sugar that was created by yeast. In order to lower their taxes, brewers started using cane sugar.

Imperial Stouts can have many different tastes. For example, The Great Divide Yeti was very hoppy (and delicious, I might add) while the Mountain Sun Nilhilist was on the sweet side (at least in comparison).

The "Out of the Box" were a little strong for me. When they get this strong, they taste like 'moonshine' to me. And, I am a lover of beer (not moonshine).

In addition to all the lovely beers above and the educational element, we were also served appetizers. These included Soft Pretzels served with Santa Fe Artichoke Cheese Dip and Pumphouse-made Beer Mustard, Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno Sausages, Cheese and Crackers.

I really had a great time at this event and will definitely be attending all the others.

Cheers!
Jennifer

The Mountain Sun BreweryJenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-56884979947775473452010-01-23T11:14:00.000-08:002010-01-23T11:59:36.038-08:00Ales for Females - January meetingThe January meeting of the Ales for Females at Left Hand Brewing was another fun event. This month they focused on Winter Ales.

Many brewers make Spiced Beers as their Winter Ales. I am not particularly fond of the spiced beers so I was pleased that we were tasting non-spiced beers.

The first beer was Alaskan Winter Ale - brewed with Spruce Tips. This beer was served with slices of tangerine. The beer is in the style of an old english ale with a sweet-malt taste. It wasn't my favorite beer but okay.

Next up was Jubelale from Deschutes Brewery in Oregon. This beer was paired with Margaret's Artisan Bakery's Goji Berry and Pistachio Crisps. These were nice little crackers that went well with beer. We were served a few pieces of the crackers plain and two very small pieces of the cracker with a mild blue cheese. The crackers with the blue cheese were phenomenal with the beer! Strong ales go well with fat - in this case, blue cheese.

Lastly, we tasted Left Hand's Fade to Black . Fade to Black has chocolate, coffee and raisin flavors. This is a delicious beer and my current favorite winter beer. Fade to Black was served with Columbus Hot Fennel Salame. Again, strong beers taste good with some fat. The salame was excellent - the spicyness and fennel went great with the Fade to Black.

After the beer and food pairings. We were educated on the basic beer ingredients and how they relate to each other. Mashing is the process of breaking down starch into sugars.

More malt (malted barley) = more sugar = higher ABV. The commercial brewers use corn and rice along with some malt to make their beers. This is one reason their beers are not very flavorful nor strong.

I love Fade to Black!

Cheers!
JenniferJenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683876412719226050.post-31165342836469985902009-11-07T12:21:00.000-08:002009-11-07T12:46:46.411-08:00Left Hand Beer and Food Pairing (with Slow Food Boulder)I attended a Beer and Food Pairing event at Left Hand Brewing earlier this week. The event was sponsered by Slow Food Boulder,

Josh, the head bartender at Left Hand, did a great job of walking us through the beer and food pairings and why they were paired up together. I didn't take notes so you will have to call Josh.

All beer was provided by Left Hand and the food was from a Terroir Restaurant , Haystack Mountain, and Belvedere Belgian Chocolate Shop.

Here's what we had:
Bruschetta with Cannellini Bean, Rosemary, Truffle Oil and Haystack Mountain Goat Cheese paired with Left Hand Brewing Polestar Pilsner - South German Style Lager (5.5% ABV)

Haystack Mountain Snowdrop: Cultured, Pasturized Goat Milk Cheese paired with Left Hand Sawtooth Ale: Extra Special Bitter (4.8% ABV)

Haystack Mountain Red Cloud: Washed Rind, Raw Goat Milk Cheese (Aged 60 days) paired with Left Hand Brewing 400 Pound Monkey: English Sytle IPA (6.6% ABV)

Belvedere Raspberry Truffle: Milk Chocolate Filled with Raspberry Flavored Chocolate (34% Cacao) paired with Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout: Sweet Stout (5.9% ABV)

Belvedere Royal Truffle: Dark Chocolate Filled with Cognac Flavored Dark Chocolate Ganache (53% Cacao) paired with Left Hand Brewing Imperial Stout: Russian Imperial Stout (10.4% ABV)

It was all delicious! I was particularly fond of the Bruschetta (fabulous!!), the Snowdrop ( I think I preferred this cheese over the Red Cloud, even though the Red Cloud is more aged and more expensive) and the Dark Chocolate was delicious.Jenniferhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03594364128292390863noreply@blogger.com0
